Preparation before your tan
-
Complete ALL other services at least 24 hours before your tan, such as manicures, pedicures, waxing, facials, massages, eyelashes, etc. Your spray tan is your LAST stop!
-
Shower, Shave, and GENTLY EXFOLIATE at least 12 hours before your session for the best outcome. (Pay particular attention to your hands, elbows, knees, and feet as these are places more apt to over-develop).
-
Avoid wearing any make-up, lotion, or deodorant to your session.
-
Don't apply acne medication prior to your spray tan. I will dry out the skin, which will affect the results of the tan. It can cause the solution to tan too dark in certain areas and peel off in others, resulting in uneven results. If possible stop using a few days before your spray tanning session. If your acne medication is unavoidable, we will not spray tan your face. Oral acne medications, such as Accutane, may also cause severe drying of the skin which can affect the tan. It is not recommended to spray tan when using these medications.
-
Solution temporarily will stain fabrics. Wear loose, dark clothing to your spray tan appointment and while your spray tan is still developing. Loose swimsuit cover-ups, sundresses, loose-fitting T-shirts, shorts, or pants are perfect choices. Avoid tight clothes such as yoga pants or jeans they will rub against your new spray tan.
-
If you have asthma or are pregnant please consult with your doctor before booking your spray tan.
Spray tanning mature skin
Aged “mature” skin can be difficult to work with. Skin will have more UV damage, time-related wear and tear, fine lines, wrinkles, dry or scaly patches, skin growths, and laxness. It will normally exfoliate faster naturally, and often unevenly, which can lead to a faster fading tan. The tan may not absorb as smoothly and evenly, as with younger skin. The texture is these areas are dryer than the surrounding skin, and they absorb the solution more heavily.

A common client complaint is the appearance of “new” dark spots, which appear only AFTER spraying. These look like moles or “age spots”, or odd dark “splats”. They will always appear in the exact same location, with repeat tans, even when you have exfoliated off all old color. They may feel flat or slightly raised. These "spots" are related to aged or UV damaged skin or damaged skin areas from friction. They increase with age and temporarily darken from sunless tanner use.

They are very common on the legs, which also have more UV damage, on many women. Also seen on other areas of regular sun exposure (arms, shoulders, backs, chest, hands).

These spots always appear in the exact same spot, same shape, and size. This indicates they are not spattered or solution drips, but an issue with the skin surface.

Some things that will help:
-
Exfoliation regularly can help. An exfoliating glove, pad, or mitt, with a mild shower gel, works well.
-
Premoisterizing the skin with a moisture dry oil spray or hydration treatment may help. Dry oil sprays are formulated for safe use before applying your spray tanning solution. When applied correctly (do not over-apply) it will not hamper your spray tan development or penetration. It absorbs quickly, and can also be used for daily moisturizing.
-
Use a solution product with a lighter bronzer. Using a lighter DHA product in the range of 6%, 7%, and 8% DHA will make the skin appear less aged and younger as to the spray tan being too dark (let your tanning artist know you have age spots so she can customize your tanning solution).
-
Shower at the 8hr make of your spray tan developing time. Your tan will be lighter but so will the spots.
-
About every 4-6 weeks the “spots” may get very dark from repeated tanning. Take a break from tanning for a week or so, and exfoliate skin carefully, every day or every other day, to remove as much color buildup on the dark spots as possible. Then you can start spray tanning again with fewer spots.
During your session
-
Women 18+ have the option to tan topless, nude, wear a swimsuit, or whatever you feel most comfortable in. Men must wear boxers or briefs.
-
During the session, you will be guided through various positions to stand, as the airbrush tan is applied.
-
Please have a spot where there is good lighting, extra space, and an outlet, we will be setting up a tanning tent and using the outlet for the tanning gun. (I have an extension cord so don't worry too much about the distance of the outlet).
Complimentary
I include a Ph Balance spray to help get the most even spray tan possible, the skin firming elixir, and a full body setting powder to eliminate the post sticky feeling. The setting powder is applied once your spray tan application is done. You can get dressed, feeling dry, looking fantastic and off you GLOW!
Spray Tan Care Afterwards
-
Do not shower or sweat excessively for the next 8-10 hours. For Rapid spray tans, do not shower or sweat excessively for the next 2-4 hours.
-
The first shower after your spray tan should be with warm water only, no soap. The tanning bronzer rinsing off is normal. It’s just the body bronzer going down the drain. You can shower with soap 24 hours after your spray tan. pat dry after showers to cut down on excess exfoliation.
-
Use a body wash that is made with natural and organic ingredients that won't strip the tan. Products that have ingredients such as alcohol in them will cause the tan to fade faster! AVOID antibacterial soaps, Dove, Dial, Ivory, Nivea, and Oil of Olay. Aveeno is a great one to use.
-
Do not apply moisturizer until after your first shower. Applying at any time before can cause streaking.
-
For your second shower, whether you’re self-tanning or have a spray tan, apply a shower oil (not baby oil) before you turn the water on. It’s best to do this in the shower on dry skin because it creates a barrier that protects your skin from the heavy metals and chlorine in the water. That’s essentially what dries our skin out and fades our tan. I actually recommend using it whether you have a tan or not, because it will protect your skin. It’s really nice for shaving as well.
-
Moisturize 2x daily with post-tan products as directed during the life of your spray tan. This will preserve your tan for as long as possible and ensure it fades evenly. Lotions with DHA will help moisturize and allow the spray tan to fade more evenly.
-
Try to shave less frequently! You can shave while having a spray tan, but using light pressure is advised!
-
Avoid the hot tub, chlorine, and the ocean as much as possible.
-
Your pets will love to lick you because the tanning formula is derived from sugar. Cuddling isn’t the wisest either, because if there’s a lot of heat, that can create moisture, and moisture is what is going to ruin the self-tan if it’s within the first eight hours or so. Moisture is just the one thing you want to protect yourself from while your tan is developing.
-
You can expect your tan to last for about a week. If you wish to maintain a consistent glow then every 7-10 days would be recommended.

**The most important thing that you can do to make your spray tan last longer is to moisturize! If a client does not moisturize the skin while they have a spray tan, the top layer of the skin will shed quicker, causing the tan to fade even faster. Our skin cells (the top layer-epidermis) sheds about every two weeks. The less a client moisturizes, the dryer their skin and the quicker it sheds (leading the top layer of the skin to flake and the spray tan to come off quicker).**
